Holistic Love:  Ancient Approaches to the Modern Pet

Pets are often the ones that fall through the cracks of our busy days. Each morning we face a mountain of responsibility, and how do our ultra-modern lifestyles affect our ultra-modern pets? Less space to romp around in, truncated time outdoors and less fruitful companionship with busy owners can have myriad physical, emotional and spiritual consequences on our pets.

That's why the holistic approach to our pets is so important. The holistic approach recognizes that everything that happens around a pet or directly to a pet has an impact on his or her body, soul and mind.

Chaotic family life, for example, produces frenetic energy all around a dog. That energy actually affects the dog’s entire being: behavior, general health, appetite and even shedding.

Holistic pet health practitioners recognize that the body contains a central force that keeps it in harmony. Some call that energy Chi. The key to a healthy, happy pet is to keep the energy in proper balance, regulating all the parts of the body and the various external energies. When an animal's health is compromised or begins to age, this force can become weak or misdirected, causing the body to lose its energy balance.

Pets withstand damage every day. Many eat nutritionally inadequate food and treats loaded with byproducts and preservatives. They jump from high distances, walk on chemically treated lawns ... the list goes on and on. As pets get older and stiffer, their ability to stretch and dart up stairs lessens, especially if they have had a sedentary youth.

Sometimes even a long winter indoors can make pets emerge feeling a little creaky and less agile.

We at HealthyPetNet believe in the holistic approach to our pets. We believe in prevention as opposed to conjuring up an army of cures for a health issue that could have been prevented in the first place. This is not a brand spanking new trend. The holistic approach is an ancient one and there's nothing like bringing in the old to help the new.

Doing energy work on your pet on a regular basis, even if your pet is in good shape, can make a marvelous difference in your pet's current health. It can also greatly enhance the relationship you have with your pet. However, most pet owners aren't well versed in the ancient ways of Reiki or acupuncture.

So, as owners, how can we keep our pets healthy with our own two hands?

The Hands On Approach to Loving Your Pet

If you're truly interested in the holistic approach, then giving your pet massages in addition to high quality, nutrient rich food and nutritional supplements can help keep your pet in mint condition. Not only is massage a great way to spot situations on your pet's body that you wouldn't have caught otherwise, but it's a great way to bond with your pet.

If you want to enhance your pet's internal health, relax muscles, stimulate the good energies in the joints and stimulate different neurotransmitters—the body's own natural healing mechanisms—then massage or acupressure is a good place to start. Below are some of the basics.

It is important for you to relax, as well. Breathe slowly and deeply, expanding your stomach out as you breath out and pulling your stomach gently in as you breath in.

Locate a quiet, restful place and choose the right time. (After a meal or just after play time is not ideal.) Start by brushing your hands gently from the head to the beginning of the tail. Continue this at a speed that allows your pet to relax. You will see and feel the relaxation.

There are acupressure points all over the body. They lie between the muscle and the bone. There are books that show you exactly where these points are located. For general massage, focus on the area that seems to be affecting your pet. You may want to massage that area for a while. Your pet will tell you if you are doing a good job or not just by his or her level of relaxation. Apply a steady rotating pressure with a fingertip to the chosen acupressure point. To stimulate the point and give it more energy, rub it clockwise. If you want to calm your pet down or relax a sore muscle, massage counterclockwise.

If you can’t get calm and comfortable or if your pet is clearly unhappy, the massage will not be helpful. Get up and plan another time to do it.

As your pet’s energy meets with yours, you will see and feel an alignment between you. His or her breathing may become closer to your rhythm or move so that your hands hit certain points more often. This is the ultimate example of the human animal bond.

Towards the end of the session, your pet will be relaxed enough for you to gently rub his ears, rub softly around his eyes and on his muzzle. When you are finished, rise slowly to give your pet the cue that the session is over.

This is a very basic overview of some methods you can think about; however, it's important to know exactly what you're doing before you begin, so below are Dr. Jane's favorite books on acupressure and massage.

Dog Breed of the Month: The German Shepherd
One of the most recognizable and utilized breeds in the world, the strong, agile and sinewy German Shepherd is one of the few dogs that can be found accompanying a SWAT team, guiding the visually impaired and guarding the doorways of your typical American household, existing colorfully in each realm. Only in existence for about 90 years, we trace this breed’s ancestry back to a group of sheepherding and farm dogs in Germany.

german sheppard

Informal breeding groups of sheepherders collaborated to create dogs with desirable working qualities. They’ve done just that—creating a beautiful breed with a harmonious body, an undeniable intelligence about them and a disarming loyalty.

Coming to U.S. in the early 1900’s, this breed became popular after its work with the Red Cross in World War I and became notorious after the silent film star Rin Tin Tin arrested the sentiments of the American people.

The trainability of this breed is fantastic. The German Shepherd is pup of all trades: used as guide dogs, watch dogs, obedience dogs, agility dogs, herding dogs, drug detection dogs as well as a search and rescue dogs. What can’t this dog do?

Though there are not too many drawbacks to this breed, it’s good to know that they are heavy shedders, especially in the spring.

Other than that, the German Sheppard is a natural breed, not requiring clipping or unusual amounts of grooming.

If you want to purchase a German Shepherd pup, consult a breeder you trust. Unwise breeding has resulted in bone structure problems, which manifests in the form of hip and shoulder dysphasia. They also have a susceptibility to bloat or stomach turns, a clotting disorder called Von Willebrand’s disease as well as progressive retinal atrophy—in other words, eye problems.

This breed is also known for its sound temperament, one of its many inheritances as a result of its breeding. It is fearless without being hostile. It is full of expression and self-confidence, though not without a certain aloofness. You have to gain this dog’s trust. It won’t love you immediately like the Golden Retriever. Don’t get us wrong; this breed is not rude or timid. The German Sheppard is poised and approachable though this breed does have a watchtower heart.

Agility for Dogs & Cats ... a Vitamin, Mineral & Herbal Formula
to Support Bones & Joints

Let's face it, most of us don't treat our pets to massages, acupuncture and Reiki.

Many dogs and cats don't get adequate exercise. Some pets are bred such that healthy joints in the back, knee or hips are almost unusual. No matter the breed type, dog or cat, age takes its toll on the body and the joints are no exception.

Even if you could massage your pet, chances are that his or her body would welcome a balance of joint nutrients, which come with their individual energies.

Let's put it this way: ingredients have energy.

The trick is to select the appropriate nutrients for the body’s many types of joint tissues and cells. Agility's ingredients work together as a balancing formula. As a balancing mechanism, its results are similar to a massage. When you massage, you are sending signals within the cells of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. It's much like waking an army and rousing them to action. Agility does the same. Used in conjunction with one another, Agility and regular massages are powerful for a pet's body.

Each ingredient carefully considered, Agility was formulated with the body's structural system in mind, which happens to include more than bone alone. Make a fist and you will see that while your finger bones close, the muscles, skin, tendons and ligaments are all involved, structurally.
Agility contains scientifically tested ingredients that can help maintain joint and connective tissue health, such as:

MSM ... a natural source of organic sulfur, which is crucial for the maintenance of healthy ligaments, tendons, bones and joints.

Glucosamine ... helps promote joint flexibility and mobility. It works well in conjunction with the sea mussels in Agility.

Boswellia herb and Omega-3 oils ... promote health for all the tissues that surround the joints.

Antioxidant rich herbs Alfalfa and Yucca ... donate all types of rich nutrients for the cause of healthy joints and support the two important organs, kidney and liver, that help eliminate undesirable substances in the body.

How do they know where to go? They go with the flow – the flow of energy.

Dr. Jane Says
"No one part of the body stands alone. Massage the muscles if you want to help the kidneys. Give alfalfa if you want to support healthy kidneys and the bone. I deeply believe that we are all built on and around energy. I massage all of my animals. I even take my goat Daisey for acupuncture!"
